
Dr Agbor Ako
MB, MD, PgCert(Endo), PhD, FFPM
Dr Ako is a multiple award-winning UK-trained Consultant Physician with over 20 years of deep clinical expertise and specialisation in Diabetes, Endocrinology, General (Acute) Medicine mainly within the NHS in England. In the past 10 years he has further gained global expertise in Pharmaceutical Industry as Senior Medical Director, leading global teams to discover and develop transformational medicines in diseases with huge unmet medical needs.
Having qualified in medicine with honours, in Yaoundé, Cameroon, he was rapidly promoted to head a local district hospital, before being appointed in 2004 as the first Clinical Lead of the National Obesity Centre, alongside his clinical specialisation in Diabetes and Endocrinology. In 2006, he gained a prestigious scholarship from the Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Northen Ireland to further his specialisation in Medicine (focusing on Diabetes and Endocrinology). Under the supervision of Professor Andrew Boulton (then President of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes), he completed his specialist training at Manchester Royal Infirmary through the International Sponsorship Scheme (ISS) sponsored by the Royal College of Physicians, London. He further completed his PhD at the University of Manchester in 2010 and his clinical research work was internationally recognised through numerous awards and seminal lectures.
As CEO and Medical Director for A Plus Health Ltd, Dr Ako brings to the role broad NHS clinical practice, expertise and acumen covering a range of medical specialties and currently maintains clinical practice by running ad-hoc clinics and ward rounds as a consultant at various NHS Trusts/hospitals across the UK. Previously, he was head of a 30+ bedded Medical Admission Unit (MAU) at the Warrington General Hospital with over 60 junior doctors under his supervision as Rota Master and member of the Divisional Transformation Group where he pioneered and implemented multidisciplinary Qualitative Ward Rounds.
In 2015 he transitioned to pharmaceutical practice in drug discovery and development for severe and/or debilitating diseases alongside continuing clinical practice within the NHS. He is a Senior Pharmaceutical Physician Leader with accrued knowledge and experience spanning all stages of clinical development and in medical affairs. An experienced line and matrix manager of small and large global teams some of which have received recognition/awards as industry best practice by organisations such as the Dalberg Consultancy, World Bank (Money and Microbes) and the Access to Medicine Index.
He has expertise in medical affairs as a senior medical advisor and attained UK ABPI final medical signatory status before transferring to clinical development holding roles of increasing seniority and responsibility. He has been a Senior Medical Director for over 6 years covering all areas of clinical development and regulatory interactions. Solutions-focused and deploy innovative, evidence-informed approaches to ensure transformational medicines are discovered, developed, and commercialised with acceptable risk/benefit profiles, optimising probability of success. His independent clinical academic research work in the field of Endocrinology and Diabetes prior to joining Pharma has been recognised through numerous prestigious international awards.
